For backpakers on their own way to reach Raja Ampat, there is a daily ferry from Sorong to Waigeo except Indonesian public holidays. Waigeo is the capital or Raja Ampat districts, there are quite many choices of accommodations in Waigeo. And a returned daily ferry from Waigeo to Sorong. The ticket costs Rp 120,000.- (around USD12) one way ticket.

Daily ferry schedule:

Sorong - Waigeo: 11:00 am daily

Waigeo - Sorong: 13:00 pm daily

The distance Sorong to Waigeo is around 50 miles (around 10 km), at the Northeast of Sorong Harbour. It takes around 2 hours journey from Sorong to Waigeo and vice versa. Speedboat charter are also available at Sorong harbour for at around Rp 5 millions rupiah.

If your flight arrives in Sorong later, then a homestay in Sorong is an option.

The Indonesian national shipping company, PELNI (PT Pelayaran Nasiona Indonesia) has transport service with Sorong port to get to Sorong on budget or getting out from Sorong to any other port destinations around Indonesia.

Travellers and visitors from outside of Raja Ampat are required to an purchase entrance fee to help support Raja Ampat marine conservation and the community. Bacpackers can arrange to buy their own entrance fee at Sorong harbour or at the Tourist Information Center in Waisai on Waigeo as your last chance.  

Entrance fee price:

Indonesian passport - Rp 250,000.-

International passport - Rp 1,000,000.- (1 millions rupia) - approx. USD100 or approx. Euro90.

Payment is in Indonesian currency, in return you will receive a waterproof plastic entrance tag featuring a photo from Raja Ampat. The entrance fee lasts for one calender year.
